Today was a surprise considering the news. There was not great economic news to hang on, particularly considering that the 10.2% unemployment was the worst reading since 1983. As the market did not crater and as it went positive throughout the day, it almost felt as though the 10.2% of the officially unemployed don't matter to the economy as everyone keeps noting the 'lagging indicator' effect. Still, stocks held their own for most of the day and where the real direction for the end of the day bells felt uncertain until the end of the day.

High productivity all helped fuel the rally today, partly in hopes that this leads to more hiring in 2010. The lowest number of new jobless claims since January helped as well as the DJIA was floating right around the 10,000 mark at the closing bell.

Today was an odd trading day considering that the FOMC meeting seemed to command far less media time than in the past, but that was because no real changes in its stance were expected. And the FOMC made the pledge to keep rates low for extended periods.
There was also a mixed picture on ADP and Challenger jobs data ahead of tomorrow's weekly jobless claims and ahead of Friday's key unemployment data. Gold continued its run along with higher oil on weekly inventory data.

Today was a whip-around day. All day. Despite better construction and better manufacturing employment data, the markets looked like they were trying to roll over again before the end of day rally took stocks back up on the day. It seems that bargain hunters won over the fear that was felt earlier this afternoon.

Today was mired by
awful spending and income data as many are actually now not believing that high GDP figure from yesterday. Earnings were virtually the same as earnings tend to beat estimates but because of cost cutting.

Today was all about much better than expected GDP reports. The lackluster jobless claims failed to even make a ripple after the GDP marked an
unofficial end of the recession. The market absorbed
over $500 million in secondary offerings like it was a stick of butter being put on a giant baked potato.

Maybe it was the dollar rising earlier, maybe it was poor housing data from a
drop in new home sales. Maybe they wanted more than a
marginally positive durable goods reading. Maybe it was that
oil inventory is back up. And then there is the notion that stocks have just gotten too far ahead of themselves and there were reports of a large strategist cutting GDP targets. But investors sold religiously today ahead of tomorrow's GDP figure.

oday was potentially a pivotal day. There was a technician calling for a possible
peak in the S&P and that was partly on yesterday's dollar strength. Then came the
disappointing consumer confidence data. Amazingly, we had a very mixed market close picture today depending on which group of stocks you were looking at.

Today started out higher for stocks, but then the US Peso came into play. Shares have been the beneficiary of a weakening dollar, but then the currency bears started to cover the position. There is talk that some foreign central banks intervened to halt the rise of their own currencies, although whether or not that was the case may not be known.

This was the day that could have been. Earnings were coming out favorably, yet the data just couldn't support the stocks. There were also trader comments that BofA/Merrill had large sell orders or sell programs throughout the day. It looks like the DJIA even closed out under the 10,000 mark on an unofficial basis.

Markets rose substantially at the end of the day, in part led by the strong earnings reports from 5 of 30 DJIA components this morning alone. This was despite the discussions of the

weekly jobless claims heading higher.

Today was one of those days where it felt like it would be an up-day and most traders were feeling good, but the last hour's trading came down so far so fast that traders had little feel whether we'd have an up or down session until right before the closing bell.
Oil inventories were not a huge surprise like the week before, but the data sent oil much higher and then a weak US dollar only added to oil price gains. Some may use the Beige Book as the reason for the sell-off, but it might be how little the government expects Wall Street executives to work for if they are a TARP bank.

Despite some very
tame inflation reports, the housing data was deemed as a disappointment. Investors used today's early strength to sell stocks to lock in profits or to take at least some money off the table. Of the five DJIA components which reported earnings, the
pre-earnings gains were astounding on most of them.

Despite a
cautious report from home builders and despite a low volume day, today marked a clear win for the S&P 5000 and for the DJIA. The S&P broke through 1,100 and the DJIA broke through 11,000. We also had two mergers this morning, and while small they are signs that companies are willing to merge once more.
