Analyst downgrades: HBC, WPPGY and AWRE

MOST NOTEWORTHY: HSBC Holdings, WPP Group and Aware were today's noteworthy downgrades:
  • Morgan Stanley downgraded HSBC Holdings (NYSE: HBC) to Underweight from Equal Weight to reflect expected losses at the company's U.S. unit.
  • ABN Amro cut WPP Group (NASDAQ: WPPGY) to Hold from Buy as they expect slowing top-line growth from stagnant marketing budgets.
  • Merriman downgraded shares of Aware (NASDAQ: AWRE) to Neutral from Buy after DSL royalty revenue declined for a third straight quarter.
OTHER DOWNGRADES:

McDonald's same-store sales show that the clown still has clout

McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) announced its same-store sales results for the month of April Thursday, and the data indicate a healthy fast-food business ("healthy fast food" -- isn't that an oxymoron?).

Global comps as a whole increased 5%. Comps for European locations increased 6.3%, and the Asia/Pacific/Middle East/Africa segment saw a 7.8% rise in same-store sales. McDonald's restaurants in the States increased an anemic 2%. The weak domestic sales really need to be addressed so that they can pull more weight and add to the cool story that is McDonald's.

The stock has been a pretty decent performer over the last several months, rising over 6% over the three-month timeframe, and over the one-month period, it is up over 7%. And the longer-period returns from the past are even more impressive. Imagine how McDonald's stock would perform if management figured out how to get people to visit the U.S.'s Golden Arches more often. I suppose April's performance should be praised since March saw a decline in U.S. comps, as this article makes plain, but that depreciation was the first one in five years, and that says to me that McDonald's needs to be careful.

It's all about the marketing, of course. There are a lot of choices out there -- Burger King (NYSE: BKC), Wendy's (NYSE: WEN) and Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) -- so I think promotion of the brand is key. Some will disagree and say that menus and pricing are the big drivers -- they are important, don't get me wrong, but perhaps McDonald's needs to take a cue from Burger King and its campaign with the creepy-king thing -- those commercials are clever. Still, if this comps reports says anything, it says that you shouldn't count the clown out -- McDonald's is a blue-chip stock that is near a 52-week high, and not only is it a great long-term/core holding, but it's also quite possibly an interesting shorter-term idea as well.

Before the bell: AIG, Citi pressure stock futures lower

Activision (NASDAQ: ATVI) late Thursday reported a fourth-quarter profit that handily beat expectations as video games sales nearly doubled with strong demand for Guitar Hero 3 and Call of Duty 4 games. ATVI shares are up over 4.5% in premarket trading.

Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) and Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY) are about to face a generic threat from Swiss drug firm, Schweizerhall Holding, that said it's going to soon launch a generic version in Germany of Plavix blood-thinning drug.

Clear Channel (NYSE: CCU) reported its profit soared to $799.7 million or $1.61 per share in the first quarter while revenues rose 4% to $1.56 billion. The results beat expectation even when taken excluding one-time items that have earnings rising 70% to $161.4 million or 32 cents a share.

Battle of the Brands: McDonald's vs. Burger King

This post is part of our Battle of the Brands feature. Let us know which brand you prefer, and check out other Battle of the Brands posts.

In this corner, the clown. After years of taking shots to the stomach, McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) was thought to be on the ropes, but has found new life in tightened operations, successful product launches, and a new aggressiveness. It's currently in training to take on the coffee-weight champ, Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX), in a no-holds-barred battle of the baristas.

In the other corner, the King. Burger King (NYSE: BKC), the burger chain with the creepiest ad campaign on television (what's with the young dude waking up to find the King in bed with him?) has thrived on a two-pronged approach; over-the-top menu items and movie/game tie-ins. BK hit the breakfast market hard with its enormous omelet sandwich, packing a wallop of 730 calories. Its Xbox game tie-in, a cheap game featuring the King was an enormous success, setting a trend that has been widely adopted.

Both chains are thriving as the third of the troika, Wendy's, continues to punch beneath its weight. With a three-year growth of almost 100% in its stock price, though, this bout clearing goes to the clown, on points.

Burger King's earnings up thanks to that creepy mascot?

McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) may be the big brand name in the fast-food industry, but don't discount Burger King (NYSE: BKC). The King reported its fiscal Q3 numbers on Thursday, and they were pretty regal indeed.

Revenues increased 10%, and earnings per share did even better, rising 20% to 30 cents (that beat earnings by three pennies, says Briefing.com). Now, when talking about retail stores and fast-food joints, the issue of same-store sales always comes up, since it's such an important element to consider (be sure to keep in mind that comps must always be put in an overall context, especially if you are only measuring a one-month timeframe). Global comps increased 5.8% for the quarter, a good showing for Burger King which wants to become a force to be reckoned with around the world. The domestic side of things isn't doing too badly either as comps in the United States and Canada moved up 5.4%. Restaurant margins, however, decreased due to the challenging commodity-cost environment we all live in nowadays. Otherwise, I see these earnings as very positive for Burger King, and I am bullish on the stock.

Battle of the Brands: Subway vs. Quiznos

This post is part of our Battle of the Brands feature. Let us know which brand you prefer, and check out other Battle of the Brands posts.

Businesswise, it's no real competition between Subway and Quiznos. Subway, the number 1 sub sandwich chain, claims to have more than 29,000 locations in 86 countries, earning more than $11 billion in 2007. Quiznos, on the other hand, has more than 5,000 locations in 20 countries, earning $130 million in 2004, making it a distant number 2. In fact, Subway is the third largest fast-food chain globally after Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) (Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC, etc.) with 34,000 locations and McDonald's (NYSE: MCD), with 31,000 locations.

Both Subway and Quiznos are privately owned, franchise fast-food chains. While Quiznos is a limited liability company controlled by chairman Rick Schaden and his family, Subway is a wholly owned subsidiary of Doctor's Associates, Inc., a company founded in 1965 by Fred De Luca and Dr. Peter Buck specifically to oversee the Subway chain of restaurants.

Subway menus vary by store. For instance, its restaurants in Muslim countries serve Halal menu, and Subway has kosher restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and a suburb of Cleveland. All locations feature submarine sandwiches, ranging from four-inch "mini subs" to its three-foot giant subs. Popular sandwiches include Turkey Breast, Italian BMT, and the Subway Club. All of Quiznos' sandwiches are served toasted, and its best-sellers include the Classic Italian, the Mesquite Chicken with Bacon, the Prime Rib Cheesesteak, the Chicken Carbonara. Last fall Quzinos introduced flatbread "sammies."

Nelson Peltz finally gets Wendy's (WEN)

Wendy's (NYSE: WEN) finally sold the company to Nelson Peltz. The price which Peltz company Triarc paid was about $26.78 per share only a 6% premium according to the AP. One of the reasons the firm went for so little may be that there were no other buyers. The Wall Street Journal writes that "The move puts an end to the year-long saga that began when Wendy's first said it would consider a sale last April after Mr. Peltz began pressuring the chain."

Peltz has gotten a very good deal and Wendy's shareholders have not. The chain's current stock price is near its 52-week low. Over the last six months, the company's shares are down about 23% while rivals Burger King (NYSE: BKC) and McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) are up about 5%. Of course, they are the market share leaders and deserve some premium for that.

But if fast food does well, especially in a poor economy when people cannot afford more expensive restaurants, Peltz will have picked up a prize. When a recovery comes around, Wendy's could become a very nice business and the billionaire will look like a genius.

Yum! Brands delivers up double-digit earnings growth for Q1

Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) reported Q1 numbers Tuesday after the bell, and the company came through with double-digit growth on the bottom line. Net sales increased 8%, and earnings per share, adjusted for special items, increased 19% to $0.42.

There's a lot of cool stuff in this report that shareholders will view in a positive light. The international story for Yum! is a good one, with operating profit for this part of the company increasing 18%. China continues to be a strong territory for the KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut brands -- as many have pointed out, Yum! is a great way to gain exposure to this market. And how about this -- management saw fit to buy back shares of the company to the tune of almost a billion bucks! That says something to shareholders, as does the increased guidance. Granted, Yum! upped the per-share expectation by only a couple of pennies to $1.87 (excluding items), but that's still the right direction, isn't it? Also, according to Briefing.com, the company beat Wall Street's expectations by two cents.

Yum!, which competes with McDonald's (NYSE: MCD), Burger King (NYSE: BKC), Wendy's (NYSE: WEN), and all manner of neighborhood eateries, needs to continue the good fight on the home front. It reversed a negative same-store sales trend this past quarter, but management must not rest on this nice stat -- Yum! must explore better marketing campaigns and branding tactics to keep the comps headed higher. Yum!'s stock is not far from a 52-week high, but I'm currently bullish on its prospects.

Disclosure: I own none of the companies mentioned here; positions can change at any time.

McDonald's crushes earnings estimates

McDonald's Corp. (NYSE: MCD) continues to amaze investors.

The home of the Quarter Pounder today reported net income of $946.1 million, or 81 cents a share, compared with $762.4 million, or 62 cents, a year earlier, according to the earnings press release. Revenue increased to $5.61 billion. Wall Street analysts were expected profit of 70 cents on revenue of $5.44 billion.

Gains outside the U.S. helped off-set the weak performance of its domestic business

"For the quarter, Europe and Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa both delivered double-digit revenue and operating income growth," the company said. "Europe's revenues rose 23% (11% in constant currencies) during the quarter to nearly $2.4 billion, fueled by an 11.1% comparable sales increase – the highest in the segment's history."

Meanwhile, the U.S. business saw comparable sales rise 2.9% and operating income jump 5.9%. Weak consumer spending is hurting the chain, though, as March comparable sales were negative. The Illinois company, however, expects sales to rebound in April to a 2% to 2.5% gain.

Let's not forget about the coffee strategy, AKA "The Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) Killer." That's been a strong driver for breakfast traffic and should continue to do so for some time.

"Over the next 12 to 18 months, we're going to see coffee as a catalyst for sales," Thrivent Asset Management analyst Chris Scheurer told Bloomberg News.

This underscores why now is a good time for the great taste of McDonald's.

Before the bell: NWS, AAPL, NFLX, WYE, MCD, T, WMT

Before the bell: Street reacts to earnings (TXN, DD), awaits more earnings (T, MCD, YHOO)

News Corp (NYSE: NWS) will likely see some action today as the managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, Marcus Brauchli, is expected to resign according to reports in Time magazine. Many have wondered how the paper will adapt to Murdoch's vision. Perhaps this is the first indication of that. Also, the Journal reported that News Corp. is close to a deal to buy Newsday from Tribune for $580 million.

I had no idea that there were still some big brokers that weren't covering Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), but this morning found this to indeed be the case. Lehman Brothers started coverage of Apple with an Overweight rating and a $195 price target. Nothing really new here, with "sales momentum and share gains in Macs, potential for open-ended growth with new iPhones and more new products" cited as the reasons for the rating.

Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) shares are sinking over 14.6% in premarket trading after the online movie rental company warned of a potential sales dip in the summer months and said it plans to boost spending on Internet-delivered content. Lehman Brothers cut the stock's target price to $31 from $32.

Before the bell: Street reacts to earnings (TXN, DD), awaits more earnings (T, MCD, YHOO)

Stock futures were mostly lower Tuesday morning after Texas Instruments gave a disappointing outlook and as investors awaited earnings from McDonald's, AT&T and other big caps as well as housing data.

U.S. stocks ended mixed Monday as oil prices hit new record highs and Bank of America reported a 77% profit decline. The Dow industrials losing 24 points, or 0.19%, and the S&P 500 down 2 points, or 0.16% while the the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 5 points, or 0.21%.

This morning investors will focus on March existing home sales reading. Economists forecast the pace of sales again fell in March despite showing a rise in February. That rise could have been attributed to the largest housing price drop and no one called a bottom to the housing crisis back then. The March data will show if indeed that was the beginning of a trend, but most likely it will show continued decline in the housing market.

With Texas Instruments' bleak outlook, much of today's trading will be swayed by the housing data, the outcome of earnings from the large companies as well as oil prices, which have already set a new record Tuesday of over $118 a barrel. Meanwhile retail gas prices reached over $3.50 a gallon.

Will McDonald's report tasty earnings?

How is McDonald's Corporation (NYSE: MCD) holding up during the economic downturn?

The largest restaurant chain is expected to report profit of 70 cents per share on revenue of $5.4 billion, according to Thomson Financial. Their average price target for the company's stock is $62.64, above the $58.64 where it recently traded. Shares of the company are up about 20% as investors bet that the cost-conscious consumers would be attracted to cheap McDonald's food. Moreover, the company's cut rate, but delicious coffee continues to give Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) nightmares. This seems to be a recipe for success boosting comparable same-store sales by 11.7% in February.

McDonald's earnings will be a clear sign of how the consumer is holding up. Many are cutting back on dining out as evidenced by the decline in same-store sales at restaurants at diverse as Ruth's Chris Steak House Inc. (NASDAQ: RUTH) to Darden Restaurants Inc's. (NYSE: DRI) Red Lobster.

But thankfully for shareholders, McDonald's isn't solely reliant on its U.S. business. During the fourth quarter, sales rose by double digits outside its home country. The company should see strong sales group in Europe and emerging markets, according to a Lehman Brothers note quoted by the Associated Press.
